Can hormonal problems (pcos, insulin resistance) cause tingling sensations in my skin?

Posted on May 20, 2010 under pcos insulin resistance | 1 Comment

Basically, I have pcos and im insulin resistant and for the past couple of days ive felt tingling on my skin, usually in my left leg and big toe. sometimes my right leg tingles a little and my arm tingled once or twice. i take metformin because i dont get my period without it, but my last period i had was kind of off. i got it, but it was extremely light the entire time to the point that i almost didnt need to use anything. this is the first time my period has been weird in a while. im hoping that the two issues are related and that my hormones are acting up and not something more serious. im going to the doctor sometime next week, but right now im just a little freaked out. can hormones cause this?

I have PCOS & insulin resistance as well and I think I know the answer to your question. You see, the hormones aren’t causing you all the trouble directly.. they are affecting your blood sugar and that is what is probably going on here. In diabetic people, the blood has a hard time circulating to the feet and lower extremities (that’s why they always talk about special shoes for diabetics and such.) What I assume is happening here is that your blood sugar may be higher than it should be and you’re feeling the effects of it.

If you have a blood glucose tester at home, try testing it and seeing what it is. Normal blood sugar should be around 100. Around 130/140 is what mine is when I skip pills or eat a lot of sugar. If it is over 200, then that is definitely a problem and needs to be discussed with your doctor.

Until then, try eating healthier and exercising. Even though fruit is healthy, it does raise your blood sugar so avoid it and other sweets. Try this and see how your feet feel. : )

Edit: are you taking medication for your insulin resistance? Like metformin? If not, then it’s most likely definitely tour blood sugar. If you are, then just watch what you eat for now.

PCOS and Insulin Resistance…?

Posted on Apr 30, 2010 under pcos insulin resistance | 3 Comments

I am just diagnosed with PCOS, which has been unfound and untreated for more than ten years. Because of that, I now have insulin resistance.
Does taking a combined estradiol/progesterone pill do anything for the insulin resistance of PCOS?
What is the best way to block the progress of the insulin resistance, so it doesnt become diabetes?
Does bringing a cycle back lead to improved insulin sensitivity, or is it the other way around?

Insulin resistance can be one of the causes of PCO. The combined estradiol/progesterone pill is for the menstrual irregularities , it won’t affect insulin resistance. In many cases, metformin is given for insulin resistance.

Weight loss with pcos, hysterectomy and insulin resistance?

Posted on Feb 10, 2010 under pcos insulin resistance | 2 Comments

I know someone who has had a difficult time losing weight due to PCOS, Hysterectomy and Insulin resistance. She has been on Metifast Diet and just recently joined the gym. She is in her mid 40s. She has sometimes 2 meals at a time due to waking up later. She also just had elbow surgery so she is on this crazy schedule, unfortunately, that makes her wake up every 4 hours with energy and she can’t go back to sleep.

So if you were to have some suggestions…what would you suggest?

Tell her to get tested for diabetes. She’s a prime candidate for type 2. She should ask for an HbA1c test and it should be under 5.5%

The South Beach diet might help. Phase two is a good place to start, its not too severe and you can stick with it longer. Walking helps too, up to an hour per day.

Until she has healed from the surgery, she shouldn’t be worrying about losing weight. You can’t lose weight when you are under all that stress, because it makes your cortisol go up, which makes your body pack on fat.

Two meals at one time is a BIG mistake. It loads your body with carbs, and since she already has insulin resistance, she’s just making things worse. She needs to get on a normal schedule, eat better, get some exercise and GET TESTED for diabetes. I cannot stress that enough!

Good luck!

on an insulin resistant diet what can you DRINK?

Posted on Jan 29, 2010 under pcos insulin resistance | 2 Comments

ok I know I asked about food but now about drinking

anyway, I am attempting to put together a diet because I have pcos and insulin resistance.

it’s gonna be tough.

what can I drink? other than water

water is very bland. obviously I can’t have sodas.

what about sugar free fruit juices? or juiceboxes?
what about bottles of water with crystal light or koolaid pouches? are those things ok?

I don’t have PCOS, so take this with a grain of salt. I’m a T2D, and I find that I can drink many of those things.

Crystal Lite packets, many of the flavored waters (Check the carb content, some are awful for you!), sobe LifeWater is pretty good, unsweet tea, flavored green teas (without the sugar, I use the single teabags), diet sodas. Ocean Spray has a diet Cranberry and CranGrape juice, these are the only juices I’ve tried, as they’re low carb. Most fruit juices have a ton of carbs and sugar, and so aren’t great for the insulin resistant.

Good luck.
