When i started losing weight a few months ago i weighed 333 pounds. Now im down to 295 and people say they see the difference in me. I do have a few questions to ask those of you who know about my condition(or type 2 Diabetes):

1. Is it okay if i have a snack or meal that is high on the GI(glycemic index) sometimes, sort of like treating myself for the good work?
2.Tell me if this excercise plan sounds like im doing enough: i do 100 calories on the treadmill in 5 rounds of 20 calories, 100 reps(also following the cycle of 20), and 40 crunches and i do it almost every day.
3. Is there any way to get rid of the dark patches of skin that come with my IR?

thanks for all of your help =]
Don’t think of my "treat" as candy or something. Like i had some popcorn as my treat . Also, if you know any way of fading the dark without pills that would be great, i don’t really like taking medication

Your question about a treat , reminds me of the millions that have lost weight and then put it all back on.Because who knows where you are going with this treat dessert. Everyday you should have something that you like . Watermelon is High on the glycemic index , but its load is only 4. So have a piece of Watermelon.

And I don’t think you are putting enough into exercise . Add 1 hour walking. Hee Hee , you thought we were going to be easy with you , Eh.You take care and Best of Luck
Oh, almot forgot I think they may use Retin A to fade the dark areas. But very resistant.
Tin

…but begin to treat it with medicine, diet, and exercise?
Thanks Tin S. I am on Metformin, not the other meds you listed. And prior to being diagnosed, I was already doing 45-60 min of cardio 4 days a week, so I won’t have a problem keeping that up I’m only in my 20′s, so hopefully I’m young enough that I can make a significant difference.

You are doing the right thing to stave off or delay onset of diabetes.

I hope the meds that you take are Metformin. Actos and Avandia are killers. They cause bone fractures and heart problems.

All three : Meds. , diet, and exercise are important. But I think that exercise is of greatest importance to prevent diabetes. Plus it lowers Glucose levels , lowers Cholesterol and Blood pressure.

If you fail to do anything I say you will be diabetic within 10 years.

Good luck

I know someone who has had a difficult time losing weight due to PCOS, Hysterectomy and Insulin resistance. She has been on Metifast Diet and just recently joined the gym. She is in her mid 40s. She has sometimes 2 meals at a time due to waking up later. She also just had elbow surgery so she is on this crazy schedule, unfortunately, that makes her wake up every 4 hours with energy and she can’t go back to sleep.

So if you were to have some suggestions…what would you suggest?

Can you be a vegetarian who is trying to control their insulin resistance? I understand protein is a part of a vegetarian diet, but for insulin resistant people their amount of carbohydrates have to be controlled.

Is there anyone who is both?

Although being insulin resistant isn’t quite like being diabetic, the idea is to watch your carbs carefully. Lower-carb eating and vegetarianism don’t mix well because it’s very limiting. You need to minimize your intake of bread, potatoes, rice, fruit, starchy veggies, and sweets. You’ll need to put your focus on eggs, tofu, beans and lentils (watch the quantities), and green leafy veggies. Are you open to eating fish or albacore tuna? That would help.

I have insulin resistance.
online all I am finding is what NOT to eat.
all the diets I can find are like subliminal messages to turn me into a vegetarian.

what CAN I eat on an insulin resistance diet??

If you eat sandwiches, look for the bread that has less than 10 net carbs per slice. Eat lots of vegetables other than potatoes or rice. Read food labels and look for foods with low carbohydrates and high fiber. Most meats have no carbs, so you don’t have to become a vegetarian. A few years ago when the Atkins diet was a fad, some restaurants offered hamburgers wrapped in lettuce instead of a bun. Also, look up "glycemic index". Some foods with carbohydrates aren’t as bad as others.

I have PCOS and am insulin resistant and overweight. I’m trying very hard to lose weight , but It seems that every website I look up has a different opinion. I rarely eat meat, and when I do it’s only chicken or fish. I love fruits and most veggies, but so many fruits are "high glycemic" and one website said I shouldn’t eat fruits without also eating protein and to not eat too much. I’m so confused and I don’t know what I can eat and can’t eat (except for the obvious, no sweets, processed foods, soda, etc). My doctor didn’t mention anything about how to eat and I’m making an appointment with a nutrionist as soon as I can, but I wanted to see if anyone had any ideas as to what’s the most important factor in changing diet.

Thanks!!

I know what you mean! Every website has different opinions and its very frustrating! I tried to follow a low glycemic diet, but it didn’t last long. Honestly, What worked for me was to stop eating sugar, like sweets and even juices. I still ate fruits, but didn’t eat anything with added sugar. And the only thing I drank was water. I lost 50 lbs in 3 months (I thought I had cancer or something, because I didn’t actually do it on purpose) and as soon as I did, my periods came like clock work and I finally got pregnant and my body was able to support it. 3 years later I have 2 beautiful boys.
Good luck! I know how hard it is to lose weight with PCOS, but once you do it will make such a huge difference!

ok i have medicine that im taking now to regulated my sugar and insulin and metabolism. (metformin)
So now im working on weight loss i need some motivation for the past 2 weeks i have been working out if not every day every other day .
and this week i have decided not to include meat into my diet, just veggies, fruit, light carb, and water thats it and im doing good i just want to see some improvement and results to keep myself motivated how long will it take ??? and also anyother diet advice would be great
by the summer i want to be 215lbs and concieve naturally lol (am i being realistic)
please no rude comments thanks

The fat is the reason for the insulin resistance, which is type II diabetes. I would not avoid meat if I were you and I would avoid carbs especially refined carbs (sugar) as with insulin resistance your biggest problem is high glucose (sugar) levels. Also definitely include physical activity, it will greatly help your body’s ability to control your glucose levels.

I had spoke to my gynocologist and she told me that i should go on the south beach diet because i could possibly have PCOS. I was told before that i was borderline diabetic and i have dark underarms due to insulin resistance. I have since then lost 45 pounds and got myself out of the Obese category, but my underarms have not cleared up (thats what im looking for because that will mean that what i am doing is helping my diabetic situation). She told me that i should buy the book because i have been trying to lose weight, but only lose weight during my period, which is odd because most people gain during that time of the month. I was worried and told her that i didnt know why this was happening and thats when she told me to switch my diet. I have been using sparkpeople and its been working great. I would love to do both. is this possible? can you recommend a good book or website so that i can learn more about it? Im sure i can customize my food log on sparkpeople for my carbs and protein. Can you also tell me how it has worked for you and your diabeties and also, how it works? Thanks to everyone who answered.

yes, it is totally possible to use South Beach phase 2 food planning with Sparkpeople. I do! I have set my total grams of carb for a day at 100 maximum, so using the food planner on Sparkpeople helps me to make really wise choices from the South Beach plan.

I only recommend the phase 2 as a lifestyle food plan as phase 1 is too restrictive to live with. And this is a lifestyle change.

And no, you don’t have to buy the book unless you are a very slow learner. Then it would be helpful to refer to frequently. Otherwise go to the library and check it out. You can copy all the recipes you wish from it which is the only reason I see to own it.

Also do some food checking!! With your glucometer, prepare a food for snack time, say half a banana. Test your glucose, eat the half banana and 90 minutes later check your glucose again! You may be totally amazed at the results.

You can talk to me by email if you wish. I have lived on the South Beach lifestyle food plan for the past 12 or more years.
