Weight loss with pcos, hysterectomy, insulin resistance…?

Posted on Feb 19, 2010 under insulin resistance diet | 1 Comment

I know someone who has had a difficult time losing weight due to PCOS, Hysterectomy and Insulin resistance. She has been on Metifast Diet and just recently joined the gym. She is in her mid 40s. She has sometimes 2 meals at a time due to waking up later. She also just had elbow surgery so she is on this crazy schedule, unfortunately, that makes her wake up every 4 hours with energy and she can’t go back to sleep.

So if you were to have some suggestions…what would you suggest?

Insulin resistance and vegetarian?

Posted on Feb 10, 2010 under insulin resistance diet | 1 Comment

Can you be a vegetarian who is trying to control their insulin resistance? I understand protein is a part of a vegetarian diet, but for insulin resistant people their amount of carbohydrates have to be controlled.

Is there anyone who is both?

Although being insulin resistant isn’t quite like being diabetic, the idea is to watch your carbs carefully. Lower-carb eating and vegetarianism don’t mix well because it’s very limiting. You need to minimize your intake of bread, potatoes, rice, fruit, starchy veggies, and sweets. You’ll need to put your focus on eggs, tofu, beans and lentils (watch the quantities), and green leafy veggies. Are you open to eating fish or albacore tuna? That would help.

What can I eat with insulin resistance?

Posted on Jan 29, 2010 under insulin resistance diet | 3 Comments

I have insulin resistance.
online all I am finding is what NOT to eat.
all the diets I can find are like subliminal messages to turn me into a vegetarian.

what CAN I eat on an insulin resistance diet??

If you eat sandwiches, look for the bread that has less than 10 net carbs per slice. Eat lots of vegetables other than potatoes or rice. Read food labels and look for foods with low carbohydrates and high fiber. Most meats have no carbs, so you don’t have to become a vegetarian. A few years ago when the Atkins diet was a fad, some restaurants offered hamburgers wrapped in lettuce instead of a bun. Also, look up "glycemic index". Some foods with carbohydrates aren’t as bad as others.

What are foods that are ok for people with insulin resistance?

Posted on Jan 17, 2010 under insulin resistance diet | 2 Comments

I have PCOS and am insulin resistant and overweight. I’m trying very hard to lose weight , but It seems that every website I look up has a different opinion. I rarely eat meat, and when I do it’s only chicken or fish. I love fruits and most veggies, but so many fruits are "high glycemic" and one website said I shouldn’t eat fruits without also eating protein and to not eat too much. I’m so confused and I don’t know what I can eat and can’t eat (except for the obvious, no sweets, processed foods, soda, etc). My doctor didn’t mention anything about how to eat and I’m making an appointment with a nutrionist as soon as I can, but I wanted to see if anyone had any ideas as to what’s the most important factor in changing diet.

Thanks!! :)

I know what you mean! Every website has different opinions and its very frustrating! I tried to follow a low glycemic diet, but it didn’t last long. Honestly, What worked for me was to stop eating sugar, like sweets and even juices. I still ate fruits, but didn’t eat anything with added sugar. And the only thing I drank was water. I lost 50 lbs in 3 months (I thought I had cancer or something, because I didn’t actually do it on purpose) and as soon as I did, my periods came like clock work and I finally got pregnant and my body was able to support it. 3 years later I have 2 beautiful boys.
Good luck! I know how hard it is to lose weight with PCOS, but once you do it will make such a huge difference!

and this week i have decided not to include meat into my diet, just veggies, fruit, light carb, and water thats it and im doing good i just want to see some improvement and results to keep myself motivated how long will it take ??? and also anyother diet advice would be great
by the summer i want to be 215lbs and concieve naturally lol (am i being realistic)
please no rude comments thanks :)

The fat is the reason for the insulin resistance, which is type II diabetes. I would not avoid meat if I were you and I would avoid carbs especially refined carbs (sugar) as with insulin resistance your biggest problem is high glucose (sugar) levels. Also definitely include physical activity, it will greatly help your body’s ability to control your glucose levels.
