PCOS & Insulin Resistance?

Posted on Jun 24, 2009 under insulin resistance symptoms | 2 Comments

I've recently been diagnosed with PCOS, so of course as always I've done a lot of research, especially since it's not in my family history, I wanted to know what caused it.
I'm guessing I have Insulin Resistance. Not completly sure, as I've yet to get an apointment with the doctors (you have to ring up at a certain time to get an apoinment and the lines always busy), and I know I'd need a blood test, or at least I think so?
The reason I think I have Insulin Resistance, is just before I got PCOS I began to get all the symptoms you'd expect from someone with Insulin Resistance. I'm constantly tired, food doesn't give me energy, I'm always craving sweet carbohydrates (donuts, pancakes etc.), though I'm good enough to avoid them most of the time. Not to mention I put on a stone just before I think I got PCOS then another two stone afterwards. And whatever I do I can't loose weight, I eat healthy, I work out, after nearly half a year of doing this, I've lost maybe 2lb's?
Which is why I've talked to the doctor about Metaformin. I've heard it helps with the Insulin problem, which can reduce the weight.
Does anyone have either one of these conditions, or both, and can share their experience, or tell me what happened with them, what worked what didn't. And if there are any doctors on this, or medical students could they explain Insulin Resistance and how it can cause PCOS a bit? I'm confused, and due to not really being able to speak with my doctor I'm not getting any help.

I have PCOS, but fall in to the category of women who do not have Insulin Resistance per se. What I mean by that is that I have symptoms that could easily fit with Insulin Resistance but I don't have it.

But Insulin Resistance is a condition that can make one prone to being Type 2 Diabetes because the body is not using the insulin properly. It is treating the insulin like it is a problem like what can occur in autoimmune diseases.
