You doctor would need to judge just how severely diabetic your husband is.

the PAIN sounds like Diabetic Neuropathy — destruction of the nerves caused by consistently too-high blood sugar.

You said your husband was RECENTLY diagnosed. That means that there is a really good chance that he has been diabetic for 5-7 YEARS before the pain got bad enough that he would go to the doctor! This means that he may have been suffering from Diabetic Neuropathy for several YEARS.

And neuropathy is not limited to the hands and feet. it affects the WHOLE body. Neuropathy in the internal organs can cause digestive problems, including BOTH diarrhea and constipation, as the neuropathy affects the nerves that control the passage of food through the intestine.

Your husband may also be experiencing sexual problems. Diabetic Neuropathy is a leading cause of Erectile Dysfunction. Unfortunately, since the problem is one of nerves and not blood flow, pills like Viagra or Cialis or Levitra WON'T help much.

What your husband needs to do is get STRICT control over his blood sugars! he needs to take the measurements four times a day (just BEFORE each meal, and just before bed) and make SURE that he is taking his meds. The exercise level MUST come up, and the use of sugar in the diet MUST be curtailed,

In the case of Diabetic Neuropathy, it took several MONTHS, maybe years, to get this way, and it will take about that long with STRICT blood sugar control before things return to normal.

The Good News is that most of the pain will go away and most body function will return to normal as your husband maintains "normal" blood sugar levels.

In the mean time, treat the pains symptomatically. Take pain killers like Tylenol (NOT Ibuprofen, which damages the kidneys). Capasacin Creme (avaialble Over-The-Counter at a pharmacy) often helps with the "surface pains" and itching skin.

As for any possible sexual problems, YOU need to be patient and loving, even "that" function will return when the blood sugars are KEPT strictly controlled.

It could be the meds, but since I don't know what meds he's on I can't guess.
