Posted on Jan 05, 2009 under type 2 diabetes | 3 Comments

type 2 Diabetes rate is increasing and does anyone know the percentages% and chances of type 2 diabetes in australia? thanks!

One australian is diagnosed with type 2 diabetes every 10 minutes so you can work out the percentage from that. still thats a hell of a lot of people that get it a year.

Lotsa interesting facts at the following site:

"In 1990, approximately 350,000 Australians had "diagnosed" diabetes and an estimated 300,000 Australians had "undiagnosed" diabetes, together representing 3.8% of the total population."

    http://www.diabetesaustralia.com.au/multilingualdiabetes/HealthPros/Whatis/facts.htm

"The Australian Diabetes, Obesity and Life Study (AusDiab) surveyed a large sample of adult Australians over 25 years of age between May 1999 and December 2000 and determined that the overall prevalence of diabetes in Australia was 7.4% (8.0% in men and 6.8% in women); an additional 16.4% (17.4% of men and 15.4% of women) were found to have impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) or impaired fasting glucose (IFG) (2). In other words, nearly one in four Australian adults had diabetes or impaired glucose metabolism, both of which are associated with substantial increased risk of the complications of diabetes including heart disease. Furthermore the prevalence of diabetes has more than doubled since 1981"
