How do I know if I have insulin resistance?
Posted on Dec 09, 2008 under insulin resistance test | 3 CommentsI'm 27. I have hypothyroid (Hashimotos) and have since I was 12! I was just reading something about "insulin resistance" .. how do I know if I have that???
**I just had a baby 2 months ago and during the pregnancy they tested me for Gestational Diabetes and it was negative. If I had insulin resistance would it have shown up then?
Dear 1 Bored Unit,
There is no simple test to find out whether you have insulin resistance or not. If one (or more) of the following is true for you, then you probably have insulin resistance.
- one (or more) of your brothers, sisters or parents has been diagnosed with diabetes.
- you have a history of polycystic ovary syndrome.
- you have a blood sugar level that is not quite high enough to be diabetes, but it is higher tnan normal. It means you have more risk of getting diabetes.
- you are overweight (obese).
- you have more fat around your waist than around your hips.
- if you have other health problems like high cholesterol, high blood pressure and heart attack.
- you have a history of diabetes during pregnancy.

I also have Hashimotos Thyroiditis. I had 3 children with no signs of diabetes during the pregnancy and all 3 were in the 7 pound range. That was in my 20s. My blood sugars began to rise after a hysterectomy at age 41 (ovaries were not removed). That was 30 years ago and I am now insulin dependent.

One of the most common signs of insulin resistance is darker skin in your under arms, it is usually connected to conditions such as type two diabetes a fatty liver or reproductive abnormalities in women, your body is always changing so if you are not sure of something it's best to get a second opinion!
